When people talk about collectible cars, they think in terms of past vehicles that are no longer being produced, or if they are, they come in new models that are not as collectible. Many times, these older cars become collectible because people remember them through rose tinted glasses, or because they are super rare. Whatever the case, here are three cars that are relatively new that could become collectible in the future.
1.
BMW Z8. When this car appeared in 2000, it instantly ignited a retro resurgence that hasn’t stopped since. The vehicle was a radical departure for BMW in that it was a two seat, grand tourer that cost around $130,000. The front kidney grille harkened back to the days of the 507, but while the styling was old school, the engine was a brand new 4.9 liter V8 shared by the M5. It produced 500 horsepower and could get the car to 60 in about 4.2 seconds. Only 5,700 of these cars were produced and because of their rarity and their retro styling, will be future collectibles.
2.
Lotus Exige. This car is still being built today, but I would say that the original Exige would be the more collectible of the two. The original, released in 2000, came in two trims; race spec and normal. The normal version of the car had a 1.8 liter Rover K series engine producing 177 horsepower. While this doesn’t seem like a lot, the whole car weighed in at less than one ton. This meant that the power to weight ratio was very close to that of supercars and the car could sprint to 60 in less than five seconds. The track spec version had an even more powerful engine that produced 192 horsepower that resulted in even better performance numbers. This car was never officially imported to the US and even now, is rare in Europe. Because of the engine choices and the rarity, this car will be a future collectible.
3.
Subaru Impreza 2.5RS. This car is a little more off base than what many would consider. In fact, most people see these cars and don’t think much about them. In fact, if you do happen to see one of these, you are seeing only one of less than 14,000 left in existence. Though that number may seem like a lot, another car in the same class, like the Honda Civic Si has production numbers that run much higher. There are other things that make the Subaru more desirable still. First off, this is a North American only model. The engine is 2.5 liters and makes 165 horsepower and, depending on the year, either 163 or 166 ft lbs of torque.
This makes the car much easier to drive and doesn’t require that you rev the balls off the engine to get the car to move anywhere. It also has the advantage of all wheel drive, which comes in handy in inclement weather. The really rare 2.5 Imprezas came in coupe form, of which there are around 7,700. This was, and remains, the only Subaru Impreza body style that featured a two door version and it remains highly sought after in the Impreza community for its looks and its weight advantage over later models.
Will these cars become collector’s items? It’s hard to say, but I wouldn’t bet against any of them. If you are thinking about adding aftermarket car accessories to these, just remember to keep the original parts handy in case they do become collector’s items. That way you can turn it back to stock and increase the value.
Remember to keep all of the OEM parts that you take off your car so that you can return it to stock if you have installed aftermarket car accessories. This way you will make sure that you get the highest value possible should your vehicle become a classic.
